Ashwagandha: A Traditional Adaptogenic Botanical

Written by Upeksha Liyanage  ·  Wellness Writer, Herbicare NZ

What is Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a small woody shrub native to India, North Africa, and the Mediterranean region. Known in Sanskrit as "smell of horse" — a reference to both its distinctive aroma and its association with vitality in traditional practice — it has been a cornerstone of Ayurvedic herbal tradition for over 3,000 years.

In Ayurvedic practice, Ashwagandha is classified as a Rasayana herb — a category of botanicals traditionally valued for their role in supporting general vitality, longevity, and overall wellness. It is also widely recognised in Western herbal traditions as an adaptogen — a term used to describe plants traditionally used to help the body maintain balance during demanding periods.

Today, Ashwagandha is one of the most researched botanicals in the world, and one of the fastest-growing supplement categories in New Zealand and globally.

Ashwagandha as an adaptogenic botanical

The term "adaptogen" was first coined in 1947 by Soviet pharmacologist Nikolai Lazarev to describe substances that support the body's general resistance during challenging conditions. Ashwagandha root extract contains a group of naturally occurring compounds called withanolides — steroidal lactones unique to the Withania somnifera plant — which are considered its primary active constituents.

Herbicare Ashwagandha products are standardised to a defined withanolide content, meaning each capsule or serving delivers a consistent and measurable amount of the plant's key naturally occurring compounds. This is the key difference between standardised botanical extracts and whole herb powders — consistency and traceability.

Traditional use across cultures

Ashwagandha's long history of traditional use spans multiple cultures and wellness systems:

Ayurvedic tradition (India): Used as a Rasayana tonic for centuries, traditionally prepared as a root powder mixed with warm milk and honey — a preparation known as Ashwagandha Ksheerpaka.

Unani medicine: Recognised across the Middle East and Central Asia as a botanical tonic with a long history of traditional use.

Modern Western herbalism: Adopted into contemporary supplement practice based on its traditional profile and the body of botanical research exploring its naturally occurring compounds.

It is this depth of traditional heritage — spanning thousands of years across multiple cultures — that makes Ashwagandha one of the world's most respected botanical ingredients.

Ashwagandha for women and men

Ashwagandha has been traditionally used by both women and men within Ayurvedic wellness practice, valued as a general tonic suitable for adults seeking to incorporate traditional adaptogens into their daily routine.

For women: In Ayurvedic tradition, Ashwagandha is often combined with Shatavari as part of a broader women's botanical wellness approach. It has been used historically as part of general vitality and hormonal balance support within traditional herbal frameworks.

For men: In traditional Ayurvedic men's wellness formulations, Ashwagandha root is frequently combined with Shilajit and Gokshura as a vitality-supporting botanical blend. It has a long traditional association with energy, stamina, and general physical vitality.

Note: These represent traditional uses within historical herbal practice. Herbicare Ashwagandha products are dietary supplements, not medicines. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition.

Key naturally occurring compounds in Ashwagandha

What makes Ashwagandha botanically distinctive is its unique phytochemical profile:

Withanolides — Steroidal lactones found exclusively in Withania somnifera. These are the primary compounds measured in standardised extracts (typically expressed as a percentage, e.g., 2.5%, 5%, or 10% withanolides).

Alkaloids — Including isopelletierine, anaferine, and cuseohygrine, naturally present in the root.

Saponins — Naturally occurring glycosides contributing to the plant's overall botanical profile.

Iron — Ashwagandha root is a natural source of iron, which contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism.

Herbicare uses root extract, not leaf extract — the root is the part of the plant with the longest historical use in Ayurvedic tradition and the most established phytochemical profile.

How to incorporate Ashwagandha into your daily routine

Ashwagandha is a versatile botanical available in several formats:

Ashwagandha Capsules
The most convenient daily format. Herbicare Ashwagandha Capsules provide a standardised root extract in a clean, vegan vegetable capsule — no fillers, no binders. Take 1–2 capsules daily with a meal as directed on the label.

Ashwagandha Root Powder
The traditional Ayurvedic format. Herbicare Ashwagandha Root Powder can be blended into warm milk (dairy or plant-based), smoothies, overnight oats, or herbal teas. This mirrors the traditional Ksheerpaka preparation used in classical Ayurveda.

Golden Milk Blend:
Mix ½ teaspoon Ashwagandha Root Powder with warm oat milk, a pinch of cinnamon, and a small amount of honey for a traditional evening wellness drink.
